Breaking Out of the Status Quo

“Minds are like parachutes. They only function when open.”

— Thomas Dewar

Have you ever seen an idea or a plan and thought, “This is the most awesome logical thing I’ve ever seen,” only to have everyone you share it with shoot your concept full of holes? When as a culture did we stop dreaming?  When did we become naysayers and closed minded dream stealers?  Aren’t we the nation who led the way on out of the box ideas and thinking?  I guess for some a closed mind feels safer, or maybe they’ve been numbed by the programming of our society.  As a culture, have we grown to embrace the security of mediocracy?

As for me, I’m ready for a little limb walking.  I never want to tell someone their dream is crazy or impossible.  I want to be their cheerleader and shout, “You can do it!”  I want 2014 to be my most out on a limb year ever, and I want to encourage those who are crazy enough to dream new dreams with me.  This year, instead of a resolution list, why don’t you allow yourself to create a dream list?  Dare to dream again!  It’s not too late.

My New Parenting Tool

This one was literally over 20 years in the making! I started writing it when my kids were teenagers and set it aside until I felt compelled to pick it back up a few years ago.    I am excited and honored that my good friend Jim Wideman wrote the Forward.  His wisdom alone is worth the price of the book!

I hope you find this a handy tool for your parenting arsenal.  It was written with the busy parent in mind in short devotional style chapters with helpful tools at the end of each chapter.  Whether your kids are 6 months or 60, the truths in this book will improve every relationship in your life beginning with your relationship with yourself.

God of the Counter Intuitive – Part 1

1215_02_74_prev

Recently, as I was preparing for a teaching on parenting, I was reminded how counter intuitive our God is. Years ago, I wrote four paradoxes in the front of my Bible. These 4 Paradoxes hold the Keys to Success for every area of endeavor. The question is, are we willing to go cross-grained to all that seems logical in our own mind to get to a success where everyone wins?

The first mind-altering statement . . .

We gain by losing

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” Luke 9:24

Some brilliant leaders have discovered this concept and incorporated it into their leadership teachings. One of my favorites follows:

“You can have anything you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want out of life.” Zig Ziglar

This philosophy is a slap on the face of our “take care of number one” culture. Our mind says, “If they win, that means I lose.” Jesus says we should put others first.

So, which philosophy when applied actually works?

I’m taking a challenge for the next 30 days to deliberately put others first, and I hope you’ll accept this challenge as well. Kind of like Myth Busters, we’ll find out whose philosophy is right, only our results will make an eternal impact.

Try making a list of all the things your boss wants to achieve, the house they want to live in, the car they want to drive, or the vacation they’d like to take and commit to working for them to achieve their goals. Or how about putting your husband or wife first . . . novel concept. What friend needs a win? How about your kids? There is a whole hurting world out there. Find someone and help them achieve their dreams. Sometimes what they need most is for someone to believe in them when they can’t  believe in themselves.

The life you change may be your own. This is renewing your mind in brick and mortar.

Next time, we’ll look at another one of Christ’s counter intuitive statements. In the meantime, let me know how it’s going.

Sharing The ACN Vision

I am so excited about this!  This is a great leadership growth experience.

acnblog's avatarGreg Provenzano ACN Blog

I spent some time yesterday with a group of ACN IBOs working with Circle of Champions member Al Thomas.  This is by far one of my favorite things about my role here at ACN – sitting down with IBOs and sharing the vision of ACN’s exciting future and listening to their experiences.
